Legacy PED Viewer
Version 5.0 introduces a new JavaScript diagram viewer. However diagrams can still be downloaded and opened using the legacy (Java-based) PED Viewer.
Installing the Legacy PED Viewer
Latest Version of Java - Please note that use of the PED Application (NIST SRD31/ACerS PHASE) requires installation of Java SE version 8. You can download the latest version at https://java.com/en/download. SRD31/PHASE will not operate with any other Java version such as OpenJDK or versions 9 or higher. Please also note that beginning with Java 8 update 211, Oracle enacted the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) License Agreement for Java SE. The new license continues to permit certain uses at no cost (e.g. personal gaming). Other uses, including this application, now require the OTN License and a Java SE Subscription. Consult with your computer/software manager about your organization's JAVA license status.
Phase Equilibria Diagram Viewer - This is a Java application that will enable you to view the Phase Equilibria Diagrams present on the site. Once you click the link for the PED Viewer, you will download a file called ped_viewer_setup.jnlp. Click this file in your browser window or find it in your downloads folder and select it to open it. You will be asked to give Java permission to install the viewer. Select the Yes option and the viewer will be installed using your version of Java. If the PED Viewer was successfully installed, you will see a message stating that it was installed.
If You Have Trouble With The Legacy PED Viewer
Sometimes the Java installation just doesn't work the first time. Often it can be because the computer has a previous version of Java that is interfering with the installation. So a clean install is recommended.
To do this follow one of these series of steps.
Oracle Recommended Steps: Java Uninstall
If you are on Windows 7 or Higher:
- Click the windows icon in the bottom left hand side of the screen
- Type: Programs And Features
- This will open programs and features window
- Navigate to the old Java installation and select it
- Click the uninstall button or right click and hit uninstall.
- Go to the control panel
- Find the Programs and Features icon.
- Same as Windows 7 version
Now that the old version of java is uninstalled you can visit Java Download. This will take you to the page with the latest version of Java. Note: Unselect the toolbar checkbox during installation if you don't want an extra toolbar getting installed by Java.
After Java has successfully installed, restart your computer.
The PED Viewer is reliant upon Java to install correctly. Before addressing PED Viewer problems, make sure to follow the steps to perform a clean installation of Java.
Download and reinstall the PED Viewer again:
- Click the PED Viewer link above
- This will download a file called ped_viewer_setup.jnlp. Click this file in your browser window or find it in your downloads folder and select it to open it.
- You will be asked to allow Java permission to install the viewer. Select the Yes option and the viewer will be installed using your version of Java.
- If the PED Viewer was successfully installed you will see a message stating that it was installed.
- Try downloading a diagram to confirm that the viewer was installed correctly.
Sometimes the computers operating system doesn't correctly link jnlp files to an application called Java Web Start. To fix this try these steps.
Let Windows find the PED Viewer:
- After downloading the PED Viewer, find the file in the downloads folder.
- Right click on the ped_viewer_setup.jnlp file and select open with.
- Expand the list of programs and search for Java Web Start.
- If Java Web Start is one of the programs select it
- Continue with the normal installation.
Manually attach the jnlp file association to Java Web Start on Windows 7 or higher:
- Click the windows icon in the bottom left hand side of the screen
- Type: Default Programs
- This will open the Default Programs window
- Select the Associate a file type or protocol with a program option
- Navigate the list of file extension until you find the .jnlp extension and select it
- Select the change program button in the right hand side of the window
- Hit more options
- Search the list of programs for Java Web Start. If it is there select it. If not continue
- At the bottom of the list of programs there should be an option for searching for a program. Select this option.
- This will open Windows explorer
- The path that we will eventually get to will look similar to this C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_25\bin\javaws.exe
- You will need to go to your Program Files and navigate into the Java folder
- Navigate into the jre folder that corresponds to your Java version. There should only be one. If there are more than one select the one with the highest number(e.g. 1.8 over 1.7.)
- Navigate into the bin folder
- Here you should look for a file that is called javaws.exe
- Select this file and double click it or hit open
- The JNLP should now work the next time you select it and open correctly with Java Webstart
Sometimes the computers operating system doesn't correctly link the diagram files to the viewer.
If the PED Viewer has been successfully installed then the following steps should associate the diagram files to the viewer.
Let Windows attach the pedv file to the PED Viewer:
- After downloading the diagram file, find the file in the downloads folder.
- Right click on the diagram file which will have the extension .pedv and select open with.
- Expand the list of programs and search for PED Viewer.
- If the PED Viewer is one of the programs select it
- The viewer should open and you should see the diagram file
- All other diagram files should work now as well
Manually attach the pedv file association to PED Viewer on Windows 7 or higher:
- Click the windows icon in the bottom left hand side of the screen
- Type: Default Programs
- This will open the Default Programs window
- Select the Associate a file type or protocol with a program option
- Navigate the list of file extension until you find the .pedv extension and select it
- Select the change program button in the right hand side of the window
- Hit more options
- Search the list of programs for PED Viewer and select it.
- All other diagram files should work with the viewer now as well.
The automatic file association does not work on the newer versions of Mac OS X
None of the flash and DVD-ROM versions of the PED Database work with OS X. Only the Phase Equilibria Diagrams Online product can be used with Macintosh. You will need to start the PED Viewer manually with OS X before you can view diagrams with it. Select File/Monitor Directory and select the Downloads directory. Then as long as you keep the PED Viewer open, each new diagram you download will open automatically. More explicit steps of this process are described below:
- Clear the Java cache from the Java control panel if there are any previous versions of the PED Viewer installed on the computer. If there are no previous versions, proceed to step 2.
- Download and install the PED Viewer
- Download a diagram file.
- Open the shortcut named PED Viewer on the desktop.
- Use the file menu of the PED Viewer Java application to navigate to the downloaded diagram file.
- Select the diagram file. It will have an extension of .pedv.
- The diagram file should be displayed.
- All other downloaded diagram files should work using the same process
